Our trip to UVA with special thanks to the UVA Latino Student Alliance, who hosted our group of AVID students, fed us lunch, arranged a tour, and organized a scavenger hunt. From the UVA student organization website, "The Latino Student Alliance (LSA) is the umbrella organization for the Hispanic/Latino Community at the University of Virginia. The vision of LSA is to be the representative voice of Hispanic/Latino privileges, rights and issues, as well as to strengthen and empower the Hispanic/Latino community inside and outside the University. It is a working group that brings together leaders of the diverse Hispanic/Latino and Latin American student organizations. The goal is to facilitate communication and exchange of ideas among the various organizations, to coordinate scheduling of events and activities, and to collaborate on worthy projects."
Rocking Tutorials! We are on a roll with tutorial this year. Our UVA college tutors have joined our class on Tuesday and Thursdays to help our kids answer their points of confusions. The AVID Summer Institute in Philly! Swag for the teachers! Yes teachers go to summer school too! Can you imagine going to college at the beach? We now have a good idea of what it could be like! April 19th and 20th AVID 8 is visiting Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport University to see what college life by the beach could be like! Dream big right! UVA: Day in the Life Trip: Hosted by Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity. What a great field trip with our AVID 8 students on Friday. The rain couldn't slow us down. The students had a tour of the UVA grounds, and got to go into actual classrooms and dorm rooms. They worked with the PSP students who organized the tour, lunch and a writing and science activity for our students. The students extracted DNA from their mouths to look at and worked on writing black out poems! The fraternity put on a Q&A student panel to talk about college life. To see more of the fun visit our photo slide show under the "What is AVID tab." Special thanks to the students in Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity , Jane Cook, and Dr Gittens for all of their support and help to bring out students to UVA. We loved it! The whole AVID Program got together for our Team Retreat. After snow canceling our first planned trip, we finally made it to Jump and CiCi's for some team building and fun! To see more of the fun visit our photo slide show under the "What is AVID tab." From UAB Ms. Volker came to speak with our AVID 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.· She served as a faculty member of the Biology Department at UAB from 1967 to 2002. · She was a founding member and executive officer for several organizations that advocate for civil rights and equal rights for girls and women. · Currently, she is a board member for Workshops, Inc., an employment training program for people who have disabilities. Burley Attends AVID's Summer Institute 2014: Some of Burley's AVID Site team attended AVID's summer institute this year in Philadelphia PA. We worked hard to learn more ways to incorporate WICOR, tutorials, fundraising, student and parent involvement into our schools. We set goals for our school's Site plans, and spent time working on developing our AVID program here at Burley Middle School. We are all connected- A web in 8th grade AVID During one of our Friday team building activities in AVID 8 we worked on understanding how we are all interconnected by the things we like, dislike, are passionate about, or even places we have traveled. By making more connections we build a tighter support net, when we need help or support there is that net there to catch us. A special thanks to Mrs. Truslow for joining us in the activity. Guest Speakers: We welcomed Mr. Mercer and Mr. Mullinex into our AVID class room as guest speakers. After some purposeful silliness, they addressed the importance of developing awareness of audience and how to differentiate word choice, tone, and voice when speaking to different types of people. They stressed the importance of nonverbal communication when speaking including the importance of body language, handshakes, and eye contact. The AVID students took Cornell Notes and asked questions. Thank you Mr. Mercer and Mr. Mullinex for your time! Round Table Meet and Greet- Guest speaker: Burley's very own Mrs. Saxon! Mrs. Saxon was kind enough to be our guest speaker for AVID 7 and AVID 8. The students prepared for her visit by creating level 1, 2, and 3 questions. We learned a lot about Mrs. Saxon and we thank her for her willingness to share, make us laugh, and become a part of our class. AVID 7 GOAL Carts In AVID 7 we wrapped up a unit on Goals vs Wishes. We use a G.P.A.= Goal. Plan. Action form to help set up our Goals for our GPA's, as well as a goal for making our Goal Carts. The students had two days to work, and a limited supply of materials. Their goal was to make the fastest Goal Cart. After multiple runs it was clear our goal carts could use a little more work, but it led to a great discussion about how just like our carts our goals can be worked towards, adjusted, and perfected with each goal we set. Setting short term goals, and adjusting them so that our long term goal of College is achieved. |
