What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. What is AVID @ Burley Middle School?
The AVID Elective Class:
The AVID elective class is offered to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. There is an application process and we look for the right kind of student to be in our AVID program.
In class we do a lot of different things like:
• Participating in team building activities
• Exploring college options
• Gaining awareness of professional careers
• Learning with college tutors
• Writing and note-taking for all classes
• Developing success strategies
• Visiting college campuses
• Interacting with guest speakers
• Participating in extracurricular and community activities
"WICOR Wednesday"
Here you see AVID7 composing letters to colleges.
The students used a college matching tool on collegeboard.org to find the right college for them.
They were then required to write the admissions office of that school explaining why they were interested in being a member of the freshman class and ask for literature to help them learn more about the institution.
We are looking forward to the responses from the colleges.

THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
Students typically get to visit 2 colleges per year. We tour the campus, ask college students questions, sit in on college information sessions, have a great lunch, and some fun too. |
